Richard Boxer

Richard Boxer has been associated with Manitou since 1999 as a client and director. He obtained a BA from Queen’s University, an MBA from York University and is a CPA, CA. Richard has extensive business experience, as both an owner-operator and an investor. He began his career working in the manufacturing sector for 15 years. Following that, and over the past 30 years, he has served as president of Buckingham Capital Corporation, a company that invests in early-stage Canadian businesses.

 

Richard has served on the Boards of various public and not-for profit companies including Alarm Force Industries, CDI Corporation, the Canadian Paraplegic Association, Falls Management Company, International Pursuit Corp., the Mount Pleasant Group, the Niagara Growth Fund, Norwall Industries, Nerium International, Schneider Power, the Toronto Public Library and Toronto Rehab Hospital.

 

After approximately a quarter century of service to Manitou, Richard resigned in the spring of 2024. In recognition of his tremendous contribution to the firm, Richard was appointed Director Emeritus and remains as a life-time ex-officio member of our board.

Stewart Burton

Position: Independent Director

Stewart Burton is a former Vice Chairman of RBC Capital Markets and member of the Global Operating Committee before retiring in 2023. Prior to joining the Corporate Finance Department of RBC Capital Markets in 1986, Stewart spent three years with Ernst and Young LLP.

 

Stewart is the Honorary Colonel of the 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, in Petawawa, Ontario, a former director of the Canadian Opera Company and a Director of Russell Metals Inc..

 

Stewart is a CPA, CA and holds an HBA from the Ivey Business School and an MBA from Harvard University Business School.

Andrew Cockwell

Andrew Cockwell is the Managing Partner of Ursataur Capital Management Ltd., a private equity firm he founded in 2009. Previously, Andrew was a Founding Partner of ReichmannHauer Capital Partners Inc., an Attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell and was a member of the Private Equity & Corporate Finance and Strategy practices at McKinsey & Company.

 

Andrew has served on several corporate and not-for-profit boards including as Chairman of Valens Co. and Chairman of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. As well, Andrew is on the boards of Appleby College and Camp Kandalore.

 

Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from Queen’s University and an LL.B. with Great Distinction from the Faculty of Law at McGill University.

Mark Gaskin

Mark Gaskin joined Manitou in 2009 and serves as President and Chairman, in addition to supporting the firm’s research and portfolio management activities.

 

Mark co-founded Cranston, Gaskin, O’Reilly & Vernon Investment Counsel in 1995 and retired in July 2008. Prior to working at CGOV, Mark spent approximately five years as a partner and Vice-President of Beutel, Goodman & Company.

 

Mark is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and holds the Chartered Investment Management (CIM) designation. He has been a board member and trustee of several charitable organizations and private companies including Branksome Hall, The Appleby College Foundation, Appleby College (Governor Emeritus), the Canadian Diabetes Association, Consolidated Energy Solutions and Canadian General Tower Limited.

Mark Gaskin

Dan Leslie is the General Manager of Triton Assets Limited, a Semi Trailer Rental & Leasing company. Prior to purchasing Triton in 2019, Dan was Senior Vice President & Deputy Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC Bank Canada.

 

Dan joined HSBC in September 2014 after 19 years in Commercial and Corporate Banking at TD Bank. Dan has served on several not-for-profit boards including Chair of the Audit Committee and member of the Board of Directors of Harbourfront Centre and Chair of the Canada East Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization.

 

Dan holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Guelph University.

Deborah O’Reilly

Position: Chief Financial Officer & Associate Investment Counsellor

Deborah O’Reilly is Manitou’s Chief Financial Officer, Corporate Secretary, member of the firm’s Executive Team and Board. Deborah is also an Associate Investment Counsellor working with clients to customize portfolios that reflect both their return objectives and risk tolerance levels.

Before joining Manitou in 2001, Deborah served as Chief Financial Officer of Financial Concepts Group and Chief Operating Officer of 20/20 Funds. Deborah is a CPA, CA and a graduate of the University of Toronto.

Steve Scotchmer

Steve Scotchmer is a co-founder and Lead Director of Manitou and since its inception has been an ex-officio member of our Research Group essentially acting as Manitou’s Oracle of Oakville ‘professor-in-residence’.

 

Steve obtained an Engineering degree from Queen’s University, and has extensive experience as a business executive, owner-operator, and investor. From 1982 to 1987, he served as President of Bay Mills Ltd., a former TSX-listed company that was sold in 1987.

 

Steve has served on the Boards of such publicly traded companies as Cognos, Gennum Corporation, Constellation Software Inc. and Topicus Inc.
