Independent Director

Richard Boxer

Richard Boxer has been associated with Manitou since 1999 as an investor and a director. He obtained a BA from Queen’s University, an MBA from York University and is a Chartered Accountant. Richard has extensive business experience, as both an owner-operator and an investor. He began his career working in the manufacturing sector for 15 years. Following that, and over the past 20 years, he has served as president of Buckingham Capital Corporation, a company that invests in early stage Canadian businesses. Richard has served on the Boards of various public and not-for profit companies including CDI Education, Alarm Force Industries, International Pursuit Corp., the Toronto Public Library, Toronto Rehab Hospital and the Canadian Paraplegic Association.

VP Client Service

B.C. Douglas

Bryce C. Douglas joined Manitou in 2013 and is Vice-President of Client Service. He has been in financial services for 26 years in both New York and Toronto. Most recently, he was a partner at Genuity Capital Markets where he helped found the New York office and build the US sales and trading operation. Prior to that, he held several roles at TD Newcrest, the last of which was Managing Director in institutional equities. Bryce attended McGill University, studying economics and has held several securities licenses, including the US Series 24, Series 55, Series 7 and Series 63, as well as the Partners, Directors and Officers in Canada.

Mark Gaskin

Mark Gaskin joined Manitou in 2009 as President and Chairman of Manitou, and supports the firm’s research and portfolio management activities. He co-founded Cranston, Gaskin, O’Reilly & Vernon Investment Counsel in 1995 retiring in July 2008. Prior to CGOV, Mark spent approximately five years as a partner and vice-president of Beutel, Goodman & Company. Mark is a graduate of the University of Toronto and has been a board member and trustee of several charitable organizations and private companies including Branksome Hall, The Appleby College Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, Consolidated Energy Solutions and Canadian General Tower Limited. He presently serves on the Board of Governors of Appleby College.

Investment Analyst

Michael James

Michael James joined Manitou in 2016 as an Investment Analyst. Michael earned an MBA from the Rotman School at U of T, as well as earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and History from U of T. Prior to joining Manitou Michael was a successful professional poker player, spent a summer as an analyst within OTPP’s Infrastructure Group and completed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst exams.

Operations Administrator

Daniel Lung

Daniel Lung joined Manitou in 2018 as an Operations Administrator. Prior to joining the firm Dan graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University in 2018. Dan also spent twelve months supporting the Operations team at CGOV Asset Management (subsequently acquired by Fiera Capital) and from September 2016 to September 2017 as part of McMaster’s co-op program. Dan is a candidate for Level 2 CFA in June 2019.

Alanna Marshall

Alanna Marshall joined Manitou in 2016 as Director of Investment Management and Research. Alanna’s primary responsibility is to coordinate and monitor progress of Manitou’s research priorities, while also contributing to specific company research and portfolio management of the firms various mandates.  Prior to joining Manitou, Alanna spent 20 years at Sprucegrove Investment Management serving in a variety of roles of increasing responsibility; most recently as Director of Research and Portfolio Manager. Alanna graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Arts, followed by a Masters of International Management (Finance) from Thunderbird School of Global Management (Arizona). Alanna also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst  designation.

James Meadows

James A. Meadows joined Manitou in 2015 and is Manitou’s Executive Vice-President of Operations. He began his career at Ernst & Young LLP in 1996 and qualified as a Chartered Professional Accountant, CA in 1999. He spent 8 years at Burgundy Asset Management Ltd. where he focused on operations, compliance and fund accounting including serving as Vice President, responsible for the Canadian operations.  James spent 4 years at AGF Investment Inc. as Vice President of Investment Administration conducting investment management analytics, quality assurance and best practices. James received his Honours Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario. He currently sits on the Board at United Way Toronto and York Region.

Kathy Moodie

Kathy Moodie joined Manitou in 2001 and is Vice-President of Client Service and Administration. Kathy also assists clients with all administrative matters relating to their accounts. Prior to Manitou, she was manager of sales at Maxxum Financial Corporation. A graduate of Queen’s University with a degree in mathematics and economics, Kathy is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and has obtained the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) and Personal Financial Planner (PFP) designations.

Van-Khanh Nguyen

Van-Khanh Nguyen joined Manitou in 2012. Van-Khanh supports the research team as an Analyst and Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining Manitou, Van-Khanh spent three years as a research analyst at Bonavista Asset Management covering North American equities and, prior to that, spent five years at AIC Investment Services, where she held analyst and portfolio management roles on international equity mandates. Van-Khanh graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, followed by an MBA from the Rotman School at U of T, where she graduated on the Dean’s list. Van-Khanh also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Debbie O’Reilly

Debbie O’Reilly serves as Manitou’s Chief Financial and Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary. Debbie is also an Investment Counselor working with clients to customize portfolios that reflect both their return objectives and risk tolerance levels.  Before joining Manitou in 2001, Debbie served as Chief Financial Officer of Financial Concepts Group and Chief Operating Officer of 20/20 Funds. Debbie is a Chartered Professional Accountant, CA and a graduate of the University 0f Toronto.

Linda Pinheiro

Linda Pinheiro joined Manitou in 2013 and serves as Manager of Client Services and Administration. She is a key member of Manitou’s client team, coordinating all forms of client communications – from written quarterly reviews to managing our website. Prior to joining Manitou, Linda ran the office of a professional practice. She is a graduate of Ryerson University, holding a Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Science, Project Management.

John Platt

John R. Platt joined Manitou in 2016 and is a Vice-President and Investment Counsellor. Prior to joining Manitou he was a principal at HighView Financial Group for eight years and prior to that John held a senior management position in BMO Nesbitt Burns’ Private Client Group. John is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University and has been a board member of several charitable organizations including Appleby College, The Oakville Hospital Foundation, The Oakville Community Foundation and Knox Heritage Place, a not-for-profit senior’s residence in north Oakville. He currently serves as a Trustee of the Appleby College Foundation, (serving on its Investment Committee), a Board member of the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE), is a member of the Audit and Finance Committee of Lighthouse, a charity focused on the counselling of bereaved children and is on the Stewardship Committee of the Oakville Hospital Foundation. John is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIFTM) and holds the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation.

Talia Rovinski

Talia Rovinski joined Manitou in 2005 and is a Vice-President and Investment Counsellor. Talia works with clients to customize portfolios that reflect their return objectives and risk tolerance levels. Prior to Manitou, Talia spent a number of years at TD Bank, the last seven of which were at TD Private Investment Counsel. She holds a First Class Honours BSc. Degree in Psychology from McGill University and an MBA from York University. Talia has also completed the Canadian Securities Course and has obtained the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation.

Research Analyst

Nate Salzman

Nate Salzman joined Manitou in July 2018 as a Research Associate. In 2011, prior to attending Queen’s University where he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree in April 2018, Nate co-founded and actively managed a team of up to 15 employees at A+ Window Cleaning, a sales and marketing business based in Toronto. He sold his stake in 2014 to focus on his studies. While completing his undergraduate degree, Nate was invited to serve as Co-Chair for a business start-up organization.

Co-Founder, Independent Director

Steve Scotchmer

Steve Scotchmer is a co-founder and Director of Manitou and was the original lead manager of the Manitou Equity Fund. In addition to sitting on Manitou’s Board, Steve is an ex-officio member of our Research Group. With a degree in Engineering from Queen’s University, Steve has extensive experience as a business executive, owner-operator and investor. From 1982 to 1987, he served as President of Bay Mills Ltd., a former TSX-listed company that was sold in 1987. Steve has served on the Boards of such publicly traded companies as Cognos and Gennum Corporation. He currently serves on the Board of Constellation Software Inc.

Research Analyst

Pravin Subramanian

Pravin Subramanian joined Manitou in June 2018 as an Investment Analyst after having completed a co-op internship at Manitou in 2017. Pravin graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani-Dubai with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 2011. His work experience includes employment at DCL Engineering first as a Controls Engineer from 2012 to 2014 and then as a Project Engineer from 2014 to 2016. Pravin completed an MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto on the Dean’s list. Pravin was invited by his professors to become a Scholar (tutoring role) in Economic Environment of Business from May to June 2017, Managerial Economics from September to October 2017, Financial Accounting from October to December 2017. He was a Teaching Assistant in Economic Environment of Business from February to June 2018.

David A. Williams

David A. Williams joined Manitou in 2011 as Senior Counsel and is a Vice-President and Investment Counsellor. He has served as president of his Toronto-based investment company, Roxborough Holdings Limited since 1995. David is a former President of Beutel Goodman, one of Canada’s largest institutional money managers, where he held senior Management positions between 1969 and 1994. He also has extensive board experience, currently serving as a director of Western Copper and Gold Corporation, David is involved with a number of community-related projects and is a director of Bishop’s University Foundation. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Bishop’s University and a Master of Business Administration from Queen’s University. He is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Laws from Bishop’s University.

Sean Yuile

Sean Yuile joined Manitou in 2005 and was an analyst and portfolio manager for North American equities. He left the firm in late 2014 to join Cumberland Private Wealth, where he was a portfolio manager, conducting research on Canadian and select US equities. He rejoined Manitou in 2019 as an equity analyst, portfolio strategist, and senior vice-president of Institutional Client Service. Prior to Manitou, Sean spent nine years at TD Private Investment Counsel as senior portfolio manager. Sean earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Economics at the University of Western Ontario, holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute.
