Independent Director

Richard Boxer

Richard Boxer has been associated with Manitou since 1999 as an investor and a director. He obtained a BA from Queen’s University, an MBA from York University and is a CPA, CA. Richard has extensive business experience, as both an owner-operator and an investor. He began his career working in the manufacturing sector for 15 years. Following that, and over the past 20 years, he has served as president of Buckingham Capital Corporation, a company that invests in early stage Canadian businesses. Richard has served on the Boards of various public and not-for profit companies including CDI Education, Alarm Force Industries, International Pursuit Corp., the Toronto Public Library, Toronto Rehab Hospital and the Canadian Paraplegic Association. He is currently Chair of the Mount Pleasant Group of companies.

Advising Representative-Client Relationship Manager

B.C. Douglas

Bryce C. Douglas joined Manitou in 2013.  He has been in financial services for 26 years in both New York and Toronto.  Most recently, he was a partner at Genuity Capital Markets where he helped found the New York office and build the US sales and trading operation.  Prior to that, he held several roles at TD Newcrest, the last of which was Managing Director in institutional equities.  Bryce attended McGill University, studying economics and has held several securities licenses, including the US Series 24, Series 55, Series 7 and Series 63, as well as the Partners, Directors and Officers in Canada.

Mark Gaskin

Mark Gaskin joined Manitou in 2009 and serves as President and Chairman, in addition to supporting the firm’s research and portfolio management activities.  Mark co-founded Cranston, Gaskin, O’Reilly & Vernon Investment Counsel in 1995 and retired in July 2008. Prior to working at CGOV, Mark spent approximately five years as a partner and Vice-President of Beutel, Goodman & Company.  Mark is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He has been a board member and trustee of several charitable organizations and private companies including Branksome Hall, The Appleby College Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, Consolidated Energy Solutions and Canadian General Tower Limited.  He presently serves on the Board of Governors of Appleby College.

Daniel Lung

Daniel Lung joined Manitou in 2018.  Prior to joining the firm Daniel graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University in 2018. Daniel also spent twelve months supporting the Operations team at CGOV Asset Management (subsequently acquired by Fiera Capital) from September 2016 to September 2017 as part of McMaster’s co-op program. Daniel is a candidate for Level 3 CFA in June 2021.

Alanna Marshall

Alanna Marshall joined Manitou in 2016.  Alanna’s primary responsibilities are leading Manitou’s Research Team as well as managing the research process and priorities while also delivering specific company research reports.  She is a Portfolio Manager involved in the management of all Manitou Mandates, particularly the International and Global funds.  Alanna is also a member of Manitou’s Executive Team.  Prior to joining Manitou, Alanna spent 20 years at Sprucegrove Investment Management serving in a variety of roles of increasing responsibility; most recently as Director of Research and Portfolio Manager.  Alanna graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Arts, followed by a MBA (Finance) from Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona.  Alanna is a CFA charterholder.

James Meadows

James Meadows joined Manitou in 2015. He began his career at Ernst & Young LLP in 1996 and qualified as a Chartered Professional Accountant, CA in 1999. He spent 8 years at Burgundy Asset Management Ltd. where he focused on operations, compliance and fund accounting including serving as Vice President, responsible for the Canadian operations. James spent 4 years at AGF Investment Inc. as Vice President of Investment Administration conducting investment management analytics, quality assurance and best practices. James received his Honours Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario. He currently sits on the Board at United Way Toronto and York Region.

Kathy Moodie

Kathy Moodie joined Manitou in 2001.  Kathy also assists clients with all administrative matters relating to their accounts.  Prior to Manitou, she was manager of sales at Maxxum Financial Corporation.  A graduate of Queen’s University with a degree in mathematics and economics, Kathy is also a Certified Financial Planner and has obtained the Chartered Investment Manager and Personal Financial Planner designations.

Van-Khanh Nguyen

Van-Khanh Nguyen joined Manitou in 2012. Van-Khanh supports the research team as an Investment Analyst and Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining Manitou, Van-Khanh spent three years as a Research Analyst at Bonavista Asset Management covering North American equities. Prior to her employment at Bonavista, Van-Khanh spent five years at AIC Investment Services, where she held Analyst and Portfolio Management positions on international equity mandates. Van-Khanh graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, followed by an MBA from the Rotman School at the University of Toronto. Van-Khanh is a CFA charterholder.

Debbie O’Reilly

Debbie O’Reilly is Manitou’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary.  Debbie is also an Associate Investment Counsellor working with clients to customize portfolios that reflect both their return objectives and risk tolerance levels. Before joining Manitou in 2001, Debbie served as Chief Financial Officer of Financial Concepts Group and Chief Operating Officer of 20/20 Funds. Debbie is a CPA, CA and a graduate of the University of Toronto.

Linda Pinheiro

Linda Pinheiro joined Manitou in 2013. She is a key member of Manitou’s client team, coordinating all forms of client reporting—from written quarterly reviews to our website. Prior to joining Manitou, Linda ran the office of a professional practice. She is a graduate of Ryerson University, holding a Bachelor of Technology in Architectural Science, Project Management.

John Platt

John Platt joined Manitou in 2016. Prior to joining Manitou he was a principal at HighView Financial Group for eight years and prior to that John held a senior management position in BMO Nesbitt Burns’ Private Client Group. John is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University and holds the Chartered Investment Management (CIM) designation. John is also very active in his community serving on the boards of a number of charitable organizations. He currently serves as the Chair of the Appleby College Foundation and the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE), is a member of the Finance Committee of The Lighthouse (Program for Grieving Children) and is a trustee for the Knox Church of Oakville’s Legacy Fund.

Talia Rovinski

Talia Rovinski joined Manitou in 2005.  Talia works with clients to customize portfolios that reflect their overall return objectives, cash flow needs, and risk tolerance levels. Prior to Manitou, Talia spent a number of years at TD Bank, the last seven of which were at TD Private Investment Counsel.  She holds a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from McGill University and an MBA from York University.  Talia has also completed the Canadian Securities Course and has obtained the Chartered Investment Manager designation. Talia is currently on the board of The Toronto Jewish Film Foundation.

Nate Salzman

Nate Salzman joined Manitou in July 2018. Nate’s primary responsibilities include fundamental analysis for privately held debt and equity securities; with emphasis on the Manitou Total Return Yield Fund. Additionally, Nate has been engaged in and led several special projects involving the integration of Manitou’s research and investment counselling teams. Nate earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University. He is an Associate Advising Representative. Nate is a CFA charterholder.

Co-Founder, Independent Director

Steve Scotchmer

Steve Scotchmer is a co-founder and Director of Manitou and was the original lead manager of the Manitou Global Equity Fund. In addition to sitting on Manitou’s Board, Steve is an ex-officio member of our Research Group. With a degree in Engineering from Queen’s University, Steve has extensive experience as a business executive, owner-operator and investor. From 1982 to 1987, he served as President of Bay Mills Ltd., a former TSX-listed company that was sold in 1987. Steve has served on the Boards of such publicly traded companies as Cognos and Gennum Corporation. In addition to Manitou, he currently serves on the Board of Constellation Software Inc.

Pravin Subramanian

Pravin Subramanian joined Manitou in June 2018 after having completed an internship at Manitou during the summer of 2017.  Pravin graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani-Dubai with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 2011.  His work experience includes employment at DCL Engineering first as a Controls Engineer from 2012 to 2014 and then as a Project Engineer from 2014 to 2016.  Pravin completed an MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in 2018. Pravin is a candidate for Level 3 CFA in June 2021.

Sean Yuile

Sean Yuile joined Manitou in 2005.  He left the firm in late 2014 to join Cumberland Private Wealth, where he was a Portfolio Manager, conducting research on Canadian and select US equities.  He rejoined Manitou in 2019.  Prior to Manitou, Sean spent nine years at TD Private Investment Counsel as a Senior Portfolio Manager.  Sean earned a Bachelor degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Western Ontario and is a CFA charterholder.

Stuart Baker

Stuart Baker joined Manitou in 2021. Stuart graduated from Queen’s University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering. His work experience includes employment at Smith + Andersen Consulting Engineers as a Mechanical Design Consultant from 2017 to 2019. Stuart completed an MBA with a specialization in finance from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University in 2020.

Sarah Ray

Sarah Ray joined Manitou in September 2021 as a Client Administrator after having completed an Internship at Manitou during the summer.  Sarah graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in 2016 and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Sport & Event Marketing in 2019. Prior to joining Manitou, Sarah worked supporting the Operations and Marketing team in the e-commerce retail industry and has spent the last year volunteering as a Remote Foster Administrator at the Toronto Humane Society.
